Wind Trees

2018

“Wind Trees” is a public art installation composed of nine dynamic mechanical sculptures in the shape of trees. These sculptures reflect the natural elements, the wind and also have a lighting function capable of lighting up the surroundings at night. Consisting of straight lines and circular arcs, these simplistic lines construct the basic form of trees, while the leaves are transformed into turning windmills of five blades. This artwork is positioned in an outdoor recreational space of a shopping mall. The windmill trees are displayed at various positions on the rooftop of this two-floor building. Both the vibrant colors and the tiny windmills that rotate and glow with the wind instill a sense of aestheticism and vitality into this space. Furthermore, the blowing of the wind is more than just a sensational and tangible everyday experience;instead,it has been transformed into a dynamic flow where change can be seen. Due to the mechanical operation of the “Wind Trees”,we have made visible a once invisible natural force.

While the “ Wind Trees” combines the elements of “tree” and “wind”, it doesn’t just serve as a public art installation as it is also equipped with a practical lighting function. Its wind mechanical sensors catch the glowing effect produced by the colorful fan blades driven by the wind. Under an azure blue sky, it conveys a sweet dream-like fantasy state, promising boundless imagination.

This artwork was constructed on the rooftop of the shopping mall. There are nine installation pieces scattered around this space. “Wind Trees” is composed of trees in two sizes. The bigger ones are 514 cm tall while the smaller ones are 447 cm tall. The blades of the windmills rotate in the wind and the indirect light between the blades also serve as the lighting for the space.
We have attempted to design a public mechanical sculpture artwork and at the same time endow it with a practical illuminating function. The colorful windmills create a joyous atmosphere while transforming into illuminating trees. By positioning this intriguing tree-shaped artwork into this commercial space, we would like to bring a sensational feast to customers who come to have fun and relax in the hope that this aesthetic experience can merge into the public’s everyday life.
